This blog will act as a learning log for the "Art of Photography" course which I'm studying. This course is the introductory module for the Open College of the Arts (OCA), Photography Degree course.

Part 2 - Exercise 3

Project - Lines

Exercise - Horizontal and vertical lines

Horizontal

Not sure I was imaginative enough in this exercise. Which is disappointing given that this type of subject/theme is really up my street.

I didn't capture rows of objects (though I can think back on subjects which would have fitted the bill), or a mass of objects seen from a low angle.

I'll look out for these subjects and shoot some examples at a later point.

horizontal 1
In "horizontal 1" the lines are just formed by the contrast of white paint on grey paving slabs. In "horizontal 2" it's the shadowed steps that cause the contrast. In "horizontal 3" it's purely shadows that cause the horizontal lines.

horizontal 3
"horizontal 4", "horizontal 5" and "horizontal 6" are all of horizons. In no. 6 the sky and sea are separated by a thin line of land. In no. 4 the sky and sea are similar colour and almost blend into each other.

In no. 5 there are several clear horizontal bands of sea and land.

Vertical

Again, I think I could have been more imaginative here. I'll look out for more subjects later.

vertical 1
"vertical 1", "vertical 2" and "vertical 3" are all variations on posts.

vertical 2

vertical 3
"vertical 4" and "vertical 5" are essentially shapes on a building.

vertical 6
"vertical 6" and "vertical 7" are essentially variations on posts, but are a bit more complex and interesting.

Additional shots

I pass these trees every day on the way to work and was struck by the horizontal line created by the tree tops
