Part 2 - Exercise 1

Project - Points

Exercise - Positioning a point

This exercise is all about points.

Examples I can think of where points occur are:

  • A single cloud or plane in a blue sky
  • The moon in the night sky
  • A shack, house or single tree in a barren landscape
  • A boat or swimmer in the water

I couldn't find any examples of points in my previous shots (except of course in the exercise which seems to focus on the same topic - http://stevenbriggs7.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/exercise-7.html).

The 3 shots below all contain a single point.

The first shot is dead centre - but for me the shadow adds enough interest and dynamic to mean it just about works. Though in truth if the dice was very slightly to the left and up a little it would be better balanced. I think that's because the shadow is very much part of the shape of the object and so the full object/shape is actually slightly off centre here - and so the image is slightly off balance.

In the next image the dice is explicitly off centre and placed on the top-third intersect. A little more toward the centre may work better. Again, I think the shadow adds interest - in this instance by pointing toward the centre of the frame.

In the final shot I moved the dice to the bottom third. Here there is almost an implied horizontal. The top half of the frame is completely flat, in a way which the bottom half of the above shot isn't. I think this is my favourite shot. I think it's actually the most balanced.
