This blog will act as a learning log for the "Art of Photography" course which I'm studying. This course is the introductory module for the Open College of the Arts (OCA), Photography Degree course.

Michael Marten

Came across a study performed by Michael Marten on Lens Culture (again, a few weeks back now but not had chance to write it up as I've been concentrating on the Assignment) - http://www.lensculture.com/marten.html .

The idea behind this really intrigues me - taking 2 photos of the same landscape from exactly the same location (using the same perspective etc), but at different times, one a low tide, one at high. He's repeated this in a number of different coastal locations.

However, I'm not sure that the concept has actually produced good photos. Obviously it's going to be very difficult to find a location which produces a well composed shot in both lowtide and hightide, and (for me), this shows.

The pairs of photographs make his point well (the power of nature), so as a study they work, but as photographs they often leave me feeling a bit flat.
